Bob McDonnell could have probably gone all the way if he had used his financial difficulties to his advantage. He and his wife could have related to the average Joe in a way that most politicians can't today. They could have been honest about getting hosed in the Real Estate market, b/c that happened to countless other Virginians. They could have made a big deal of how frugal they had to be. They could have had very small weddings for their daughters and Maureen could have bought her precious dresses off the rack at Macy's. Instead of living the high life that they couldn't afford, they could have been frugal and done what the average Virginian/American has to do when they hit hard times.
But, they decided to use his position as Governor to try and weasel money out of a shady businessman and blew tens of thousands of his money of frivolous things. Now, they will probably go jail and will face certain financial ruin due to millions in legal fees. It's really a sad story of how greed and envy will destroy you.
