Virginia residents can now register to vote online or update their voter information online.
The State Board of Elections and the Department of Motor Vehicles launched its online voter registration portal Tuesday at www.sbe.virginia.gov.
Del. David Ramadan (R-87) carried a bill that passed in the 2013 General Assembly to authorize online registration.
“This is a big deal and a first in Virginia,” Ramadan, who represents the Dulles area, said. “For all the critics who say the Republicans want to disenfranchise voters, here is a bill that will allow every voter to register online, and it’s patroned by a Virginia delegate.”
He started working with both the State Board of Elections and the DMV a year ago to help them prepare for online registration. “Essentially, it allows the DMV and the SBE to talk to each other electronically,” making it easy for those in the military to register online and those who move to update their voter information, Ramadan said.
Earlier this month, the State Board of Elections and the Heroes Vote Initiative kicked off Boots and Ballots 2013 to promote the online registration option among the more than 80,000 Virginians who serve in the armed forces.
At the Boots and Ballots event in Richmond July 10, Charlie Judd, chairman of the State Board of Elections, said online registration will “provide Virginia’s military instillations with new tools for voting and voter education resources.”
To complete the application process online, residents must provide their DMV customer identifier number, which appears on driver’s licenses or DMV-issued identification cards. Residents who don’t have either of those documents can still apply online but will be required to print and return the completed application to their local voter registrar’s office.
