A business can grow from a great idea, but it takes a lot more than that to be successful.

Along the way to starting a business there's bound to be things you didn't think about and problems that arise unexpectedly. Fortunately, there are a lot of business experts online.

We rounded up some advice about common mistakes that small business owners make. Check out a sample of each column here, and click on the links below to read more.

We also want to hear from local business owners. Tell us: What are some mistakes you made along the way, and what did you learn from them?

Not delegating: "It’s easy to get spread too thin," says Melinda Emerson of Succeed as Your Own Boss. She says that bringing on employees as soon as possible to help with the work will help, and allow you to focus on what you do best. Read more tips here.

Underestimating market perception: Small business owners have told me before that it was best to play to how the public saw your business. One business owner even changed the name of his business to take on the nickname customers affectionately gave his store. Michael Garippa, a CEO of an artificial heart company, said to Forbes that his biggest mistake was underestimating "how hard it would be to dispel all the myths" about the product. Read more tips here.

Going in without enough capital: This one might seem obvious, but as CNBC points out, there are going to be challenges "you won't anticipate no matter how prepared you are." Having more than enough means having enough. Read more tips here.

Under-appreciating your customers: Rohit Arora writes on Fox Business that "usually where there is smoke, there is fire." Take complaints seriously, engage people in a dialogue and look to improve on flaws that customers perceive. Read more tips here.

Thinking about taxes too late: Maybe the most devastating mistake a new business can make is failing to account for taxes early on. Besides often not having a tax plan, Capture Planning says that many business owners "neglect to seek knowledge and advice BEFORE they engage in any activity that has a taxable effect." Airbag Thefts: 4 Targeted Car Brands
Plus, 4 safety tips to avoid theft and 5 tips to avoid repair fraud, provided by Herndon Police.
http://herndon.patch.com/groups/police-and-fire/p/airbag-thefts-4-targeted-car-brands

Concerned about airbag thefts increasing in the Herndon area, local police are warning car owner, and offering tips on how to protect yourself from fraud and theft.

Thieves have been smashing car windows to get to the air bags. Often, they'll disable the car alarm, according to Herndon Police.

Because of the ability to easily resale the air bags, police have identified four of the more popular car brands that have been targeted: Honda, Nissan, Acura and Toyota.

Arlington Police, in particular, have noted significant airbag thefts. In January, airbags were stolen from at least 9 vehicles in North Arlington. Airbags were stolen from more than a dozen cars in Arlington over one night in April.

Herndon Police offer these safety tips:
•Lock your vehicle at all times and don’t leave valuables inside.
•Park in a well-lit area or keep a light on in the front of the home.
•Always ensure that your vehicle alarm is working.
•Report any suspicious activity, such as unusual people/vehicles and loud noises, to the police.

And there are other things you can do to protect yourself when replacing an airbag, according to the National Insurance Crime Bureau:
•Use a reputable automobile collision repair shop that employs ASE-certified mechanics.
•Inspect the invoice to ensure the repair shop purchased the airbag from a manufacturer, dealer, or certified recycler
•If possible, inspect the airbag prior to installation. If new, it should be packaged in a sealed container from the manufacturer.
•The trim cover over the steering column should be the same color as the remaining trip interior. If not, it is an indication that the original airbag has been replaced.
•When you turn on your vehicle’s ignition, a red SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) indicator should light up and flash in the instrument panel display, indicating the airbag system is activated. No SRS light indicates a problem with the airbag system that could result in no airbag activation.

Bill Page Toyota Service Department (1 reply)

My Corolla is due for inspection and emissions inspection this month and it's about time for an oil change/check up. The last time I had it serviced at a dealer was at Tysons Toyota 2 years ago when I last had to get an emissions inspection. Since then I've just had oil changes at Pep Boys and the like.

Since it's right at 30,000 miles I figured I'd go to a dealer to do the inspections and maintenance all the same time. So, finally my question has anyone had any experience with Bill Page Toyota's service department? I bought the car at Tysons, but I really don't want to have to deal with Tysons traffic if I don't need to. Bill Page is much closer and easier to get to.

Support group for parents formed
http://annandaleva.blogspot.com/2014/06/support-group-for-parents-formed.html#more

Parents are invited to join Parents Helping Parents, a free support group that meets once a month at Poe Middle School in Annandale. The next meeting is June 17 at 7 p.m. There will be babysitting, translators, and light refreshments. Enter at door 2.

The group was started a couple of months ago by Sheila Kyer, a parent who also participates in the Annandale United Methodist Church’s partnership with Poe that provides free dinners to students, and Amanda Sperling of Poe’s after-school program.

The group isn’t restricted to Poe parents. Anyone with a child in elementary, middle, or high school may come.

“This group will offer you the opportunity to talk about raising children, seek and offer advice to others, and talk about any other parenting issue that may come up,” Kyer says. Topics at previous meetings included restricting children’s access to online material and Fairfax County’s options for changing school start times. Kyer would like to invite outside speakers to future meetings.

“I am just a parent wanting to help other parents,” she says. “I want this to be a place where parents don’t feel alone. They can come and just listen if they don’t want to speak. We want parents to walk away with peace of mind. We just need to work together to help ourselves so we can help our children.”

The group will continue to meet throughout the summer. For more information contact Sheila Kyer, 703-981-6080 or Kyer027@aol.com, or Amanda Sperling, acsperling@fcps.edu.

After protests, skull of Civil War soldier withdrawn from auction
http://www.myfoxdc.com/story/25678312/auction-of-skull-of-civil-war-soldier-found-at-gettysburg-canceled#ixzz33g61P18e

GETTYSBURG, Pa. -
After pointed criticism, the skull of a Civil War soldier has been withdrawn from a public auction. It has been donated and will likely be buried with honors at the national memorial park in Gettysburg, Pa.

Here’s how the story went down: In arranging an estate sale for an area family, veteran auctioneer Tom Taylor came across a most unusual artifact: a human skull – probably from a fallen soldier from the three-day battle of Gettysburg in 1863.

Taylor, who operates the Estate Auction Company, in Hagerstown, Md., explained that they found the skull while surveying items in the basement of an area family.

“They said that their great-grandfather had found it while he was tilling up a garden on the Benner Farm in Gettysburg,” Taylor told us. “And so, when [the skull was found], they didn’t know what to do with it (in 1949), so they just put it in a box. And [it] was in the basement.”

The family told the auctioneer to sell the skull, so Tom Taylor put photos of it online. That’s when the storm of protests began.

Even though the Civil War was fought 150 years ago, it was America’s bloodiest conflict, and many people objected to the sale of a soldier’s skull. Critics bombarded the auction company and the hotel at which the auction was scheduled.

Taylor told us: “We actually had a guy riding around in a pickup truck with a POW flag and a United States flag. And he was like, ‘Boycott the auction!’”

Managers of the hotel where the auction was scheduled confirmed to us they too were getting pointed – even threatening – calls and visits about selling the skull of a Civil War soldier.

The auctioneer and hotel managers contacted the family and convinced them to donate the skull to the Gettysburg Foundation. A representative of the non-profit historical group picked up the skull Monday evening.

Civil War re-enactor Jim Hendricks came to the auction to express his gratitude for the decision to not sell the skull.

“The soldiers of the Civil War fought out of a sense of duty and honor. And they gave their lives and served for those principles,” Hendricks declared.

A proposed boycott of the auction was called off. The other items in the estate were sold.

After the skull is authenticated, it will be buried at Soldiers Cemetery at Gettysburg with full military honors, according to a spokeswoman for the national military park.

MIAMI (AP) — Trial has begun in South Florida for a second man accused of taking part in a botched 2007 burglary that ended with the fatal shooting of Washington Redskins star safety Sean Taylor.

Opening statements were set for Tuesday for 25-year-old Jason Mitchell, one of five men from the Fort Myers area charged with murder in the case. The alleged shooter, Eric Rivera Jr., was convicted last fall of second-degree murder and sentenced to 57 years behind bars.

Evidence in Rivera's trial showed Taylor was fatally shot after confronting the would-be burglars in his home. Investigators say the group thought Taylor was out of town.

Two other men await trial. One has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and burglary.

Taylor was Pro Bowl safety who also starred at the University of Miami.

Three juveniles found themselves in hot water with the Vienna police after a resident of the 200 block of Moore Ave., S.E., alerted authorities on May 24 at 11:22 p.m. that there were several people trying to get into her house, in the mistaken belief a party was occurring there.

A responding police officer noticed several males walking from the side of the house and getting into vehicles. The officer detected the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle, then located “a measurable amount” of marijuana and a smoking device on one of the juveniles, along with additional marijuana in the car.

The juveniles were released to the custody of their parents or other adult relatives. The case continues to be investigated.

Hello everyone,
I’d love to spend this summer in a countryside or a small town somewhere in Northern Virginia (preferably not too far from Fairfax County). I am a resident of Fairfax City and I am looking for an escape from the stressful and monotonous urban-style life that I lad for years. I’d like to settle down with my kids for several weeks in a quiet, peaceful and unexpansive place in a rural/ countryside like location. I am originally from West Europe and I am not familiar that much with this geographic area. So, I will greatly appreciate any information and advices.

Park Authority Renames CCT to Honor Connolly's Efforts

Cross County TrailThe Cross County Trail is well-known, used by countless trail enthusiasts on foot, or bicycle or horse and now has been named the Gerry Connolly Cross County Trail in honor of Congressman Gerry Connolly, who during his tenure as Chairman of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors championed its creation. The Cross County Trail (CCT) is more than 40 miles in length running from the Potomac River in Great Falls Park to the Occoquan River in Occoquan Regional Park.

The Fairfax County Park Authority renamed this trail at their June 12, 2013 meeting unanimously, citing the ongoing support that Connolly provided at all stages of the multi-million dollar, multi-year project. “I am truly humbled by this unexpected honor. The Cross County Trail is one of my proudest accomplishments in public office,” said Congressman Connolly.

On May 25, 1999, the idea for a cross county trail was presented to the Park Authority by Fairfax Trails and Streams. The proposed route followed the existing stream valley trail system belonging, for the most part, to the Park Authority linking existing trails together with other public lands owned by the National Park Service, Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority, the City of Fairfax, the town of Reston, and with public sidewalks through each supervisory district in Fairfax County to form a continuous pedestrian route from Great Falls National Park to Prince William County Occoquan Regional Park.

Congressman Connolly added, “There are a lot of people who share this honor with me. This project is a true example of what can happen when the local community, volunteers and our elected officials work together. Thanks to that effort we are leaving behind a real gem for future generations to enjoy.”

In August 1999 the Park Authority formed a task force with other county agencies, land managers, and trail advocacy groups. In the course of the next several years the Park Authority assembled existing trail sections and rights-of-way to connect longer trail lengths while refining alternatives for missing sections. During that time several trail stakeholders and advocacy groups successfully lobbied the Park Authority Board and the Board of Supervisors to enhance the trail. Then Chairman Connolly was extremely supportive of Park Authority efforts to acquire the necessary links to complete the entire route. One of the last significant sections of trail to be acquired was the Laurel Hill Greenway, a portion of the former Lorton Prison located on the rail bed used to transport goods within the prison property. The Lorton property was acquired by the county from the federal government under Mr. Connolly’s leadership as Board Chairman. He supported the amendment of the county Comprehensive Plan to protect the majority of Lorton as parkland, an action which allowed for the CCT to incorporate the Greenway at its southern terminus. With the Laurel Hill Greenway addition, continuous public right-of-way was established and the trail was officially “completed” in December of 2005.

Park Authority Chairman Bill Bouie said, “Mr. Connolly has demonstrated a steadfast resolve to preserve parkland and create recreational facilities in this community throughout his many years of public service. He is a strong advocate for environmental stewardship and we are so very pleased to name this trail in his honor. He is a deserving recipient of this acknowledgment.”

Ceremonies to mark this new designation and unveil trail signage will be held this fall. For more information contact the Public Information Office at 703-324-8662.
