Two teens were arrested Tuesday after they allegedly tried to break into a home in the Kingstream neighborhood while the resident was home.

Charges against the teens are pending.

Officer Eddy Azcarate, spokesperson for FCPD, told Patch the department received a call around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday from a resident who lives in the 1400 block of Valebrook Lane, who said two juveniles had attempted to enter his home.

Azcarate said the resident attempted to chase the juveniles on foot, reporting to police by phone which direction they were headed when they fled. He eventually lost track of them.

FCPD immediately dispatched officers as well as a helicopter to fly over the area of Herndon High School to help track the suspects down.

Locals reported having seen the helicopter flying low over the school for at least half an hour.

Officer Azcarate said officers eventually stopped a group of teens and were able to identify the two of them that they believe were the ones to commit the crime.

The two Herndon-area juveniles were arrested and each were released to the care of a parent or guardian. Azcarate said an investigation is ongoing, and charges are pending.

Principal William Bates sent parents in the Herndon High community an email Wednesday morning addressing the incident and parents' concerns.

"We were aware of the incident, were in communication with local officials, and wanted to reassure our community that our students and staff are safe," the e-mail read.

Bates invited parents who may still have lingering questions or concerns to call the school.

A resident of Cassia Street said that a similar break-in occurred nearby in the Kingstream neighborhood about one month ago.

"My security cameras picked up two kids walking away from the direction of Herndon High School at the same time a break-in occurred directly across the street from my house on Cassia," the resident said.

"At that time I provided security camera footage to the police, and the last update I had was that they were still investigating the break-in," the resident said, adding that he or she wonders if the two juveniles are the same ones responsible for yesterday's attempted burglary.

According to Fairfax County Police logs, in the incident last month, the two teens did gain entry to the home and jewelry was stolen. Entry was made through a second-story window the residents reportedly left open when they left the house.
