Snow shuts down schools in Montgomery, Prince George’s, Fairfax

With up to 10 inches of snow expected in some areas and a winter storm warning in effect until 6 p.m., schools in Montgomery, Prince George’s and Fairfax county schools are closed.

In Montgomery County, all school buildings and administrative offices are closed according to their website. This means all events scheduled to take place in school buildings are also cancelled,

In Prince George’s County, the website reports the system is closed for students and all personnel.

In Fairfax County, all schools and administrative offices are closed according to the website, as are all events, including School Age Child Care centers.

Many local colleges and universities are also closed today, including University of Maryland including the Universities at Shady Grove, Bowie State University and Prince George’s Community College.

MetroRail is open and on time, but MetroRail and MetroAccess service are suspended today.

Montgomery County government and the Ride On bus service are cancelled for this morning. Ride On service will return when it is safe to do so, according to the website. Essential government employees must report.

Prince George’s County government is closed, with courts to be announced. People scheduled for jury duty are instructed to call the call-in number on their summons.

Fairfax County government and courts are closed today. Fairfax Connector and VRE are also not in operation.

The National Weather Service forecasts that 6 to 10 inches of precipitation are expected, and the heavy snow may cause power outages. Those who have to drive should use caution and put food, water and a flashlight in the car in case of an emergency.
