McLean-Based Booz Allen Says Snowden's Disclosures are 'Shocking'

Edward Snowden, the 29-year-old who says he leaked sensitive information about National Security Agency programs, is an employee of McLean-based consulting company Booz Allen. And officials at Booz Allen say Snoden's disclosures are "shocking" and they will work with authorities, WTOP reported.

Snowden was assigned to a team in Hawaii and was not working in McLean.

Booz Allen released this brief statement on Monday:

Booz Allen can confirm that Edward Snowden, 29, has been an employee of our firm for less than 3 months, assigned to a team in Hawaii. News reports that this individual has claimed to have leaked classified information are shocking, and if accurate, this action represents a grave violation of the code of conduct and core values of our firm. We will work closely with our clients and authorities in their investigation of this matter.

Snowden did have significant ties to Maryland, where his family lived for several years, according to Patch.

Snowden claims to have been behind revelations about several counterterrorism intelligence activities, including a program to collect and analyze Americans' phone records en masse, and PRISM, a system said to allow the agency to tap into users' data with many major tech firms without requiring individual court orders.

This weekend, Patch sites in Virginia asked readers to weigh in on whether the NSA and other government agencies are collecting too much information in the name of security.
One McLean Patch reader commented, "Being able to cultivate data for any clue of an outside threat does nothing but put another tool in the tool box of those trying to keep America safe. That is after all the purpose of the constitution - protection of the homeland so we CAN be free (and post on websites our opinions!)"

Another Patch reader commented, "Doesn't matter that it's old news. Our nation was founded with a Constitution that limited government's role and authority for good reason. WE THE PEOPLE have let "them" run roughshod over our rights for years, and it's about time we woke up. No government does things for any reason other than its own self-perpetuation."
