One of the women who was shot inside an Alexandria home Thursday morning his died.
Alexandria police say Ruthanne Lodato, 59, lived in the home. The other victim is a caregiver of another resident.
Police say an elderly, white, balding man with a gray beard knocked on the door of a home in the 2400 block of Ridge Road Drive about 11:30 a.m. He then shot the two women inside the front door just and ran away.
Police don't know if the shooter knew either woman or what a motive could be in the shooting.
Lodato had been in critical condition after the shooting. The caregiver, whose name police have not released, is expected to survive her injuries.
Police continue to search for the shooter in the neighborhood, which is where Ridge Road Drive intersects West Braddock Road. Police have cordoned off the neighborhood, have set up a command post and are using police dogs to hunt for the shooter.
The shooting and subsequent manhunt put seven schools in the area on lockdown Thursday morning.

The six schools that were locked down were:

Envoy, a private school around the corner from the shooting, was also locked down.
