This Wednesday, the Herndon Historical Society will hold its regular meeting, during which they will discuss the area's aging historic cemeteries.

Special guest speaker Mary Lipsey, a member of the Fairfax County History Commission and president of the Fairfax County Cemetery Preservation Association, will discuss the more than 400 historic cemeteries of the Fairfax County area.

According to Lipsey, at least 75 percent of the county area's historic cemeteries are
family cemeteries. Some of them are well maintained, but others—like the Coleman family cemetery in Herndon—are "so overgrown that they are not recognizable."

During the past five years, the Cemetery Preservation Association has worked with scouts and other interested community residents to clean up more than 30 of these sites.

The group also has compiled a database that includes the service records and burial locations of more than 400 Civil War soldiers who are buried in the county.

Lipsey will talk about some of these cemeteries and about the work the Preservation Association has done to help preserve them.

The meeting will begin at 7:30 p.m. this Wednesday, Jan. 22 at the Herndon Depot, 717 Lynn St. in downtown. Meetings of the Herndon Historical Society are free and open to the public.

Due to weather concerns, those interested in attending should check the Herndon Historical Society website or call Carol Bruce at 703-437-7289 in case of a cancellation.
