The Loudoun County Department of Animal Services today said the large pile of animal carcasses discovered in Catoctin Creek off Featherbed Lane near Lovettsville appears to be the remains of wildlife, including foxes and raccoons.
The department received a complaint Tuesday about a large number of decomposing animals in the creek. After a preliminary investigation, animal control officers determined that most of the carcasses were skinned wildlife. However, one skinned carcass was atypical and initial necropsy results report that the carcass was that of a dog.
Because of concerns that a companion animal may be involved, the department has opened felony animal cruelty investigation.
Also, the department has contacted the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries and the Health Department regarding this matter.
A Virginia Department of Environmental Quality representative was onsite Saturday morning and was making arrangements with Loudoun County Animal Services for the clean up and disposal of the remains.
The incident was first reported by NBC Washington Friday.
