Police charge teen in fatal September bicycle collision

Police have charged the 17-year-old driver who struck and killed a bicyclist in front of Hylton High School on Sept. 6 with reckless driving.
Police say 66-year-old Joseph James Callahan of Woodbridge was riding his bicycle on the sidewalk in front of the school at 14051 Spriggs Road about 3:30 p.m. that day. A Ford Mustang left the road, drove up onto the sidewalk and hit Callahan. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Mustang's driver was not injured.
The charges were placed on Nov. 15 after an “extensive investigation,” said Prince William police spokesman Jonathan Perok. Police are not identifying the teenage girl.
Police did not say what caused the driver to leave the road.
“The investigation revealed that texting was not a factor that led to this crash,” Perok said in a news release.
