Fairfax Republicans Speak Out Against Unqualified Candidate, Kathleen Murphy, Who Has A Record Of Failing To Vote And Failing To Pay Taxes
Barbara Comstock Clearly the Right Choice in 34th House of Delegates District
FAIRFAX - Fairfax County Republican Committee (FCRC) Chairman Jay McConville spoke out today about the poorly vetted Democrat candidate, Kathleen Murphy, who is running against Barbara Comstock in the 34th House of Delegates District.
"It is a disservice to the people of Fairfax County that Democrat Kathleen Murphy has decided to run a divisive and terribly negative campaign against a great community leader, especially given Ms. Murphy's lack of qualifications and unsuitability to serve this community," said McConville.
In response to a recent FOIA request to the Fairfax County General Registrar, made by the Fairfax County Republican Committee, the Fairfax County Office of Elections reported that Kathleen Murphy did not vote in either the primary race in 2011 (where the current Senator Favola was selected) or the 2011 General Election. In addition, State Board of Election records show that Ms. Murphy did not vote in 2009 either.
Said McConville, "I suppose we could credit her with the wisdom of NOT voting against Delegate Comstock who was first elected in 2009 and re-elected in 2011 by 10 percentage points. But when she could have voted for Governor and Delegate in 2009, Kathleen Murphy didn't even take the time to vote early, absentee or in person. Then again in 2011 Murphy didn't even bother to vote in the Democratic primary or the general election. Now Ms. Murphy says she has 'experience' to be Delegate while in the last two elections it wasn't even an important enough position for her to go out and cast her vote. Furthermore, in her own poll she asked how respondents felt about the fact that she had missed half of the meetings of the Human Resources Commission she was appointed to in Fairfax County - in other words, did they care that she didn't show up to vote half of the time?"
"This is the same Kathleen Murphy who recently made news when the state Democrat party and the Murphy campaign polled on Murphy's many other weaknesses ("Virginia Democrat Polled Voters on Her Own Weaknesses - Candidate for Va. Legislature asked voters how they feel about tax cheats, donations to ethically challenged officials" The Washington Free Beacon, August 13, 2013,). No wonder Murphy has offered no positive agenda in her race against the highly regarded and experienced Republican Barbara Comstock (R-34) who has gained the support of a broad range of community leaders and groups."
Recent news reports and tax records show that Murphy faced fines for a failure to pay taxes on time for multiple properties that she owns in Virginia and elsewhere. As the The Washington Free Beacon reported:
Virginia property taxes for a McLean property co-owned by Murphy were not paid on time at least five times since 2005.
A Staten Island, NY property owned by Murphy had an outstanding $1,392.67 property tax balance in 2010. Murphy has another business, incorporated in Colorado, that has been delinquent since Sept. 1, and failed to file required annual reports with the Colorado Secretary of State's office since 2011, according to the office's website.
"Clearly Democrats were concerned enough about Ms. Murphy's problems has that they polled on them, but there are other issues they still failed to vet," continued McConville. "For example, Ms. Murphy, who claims to be a successful small businesswoman, has not registered her business with Fairfax County according to County records, despite the requirement to do so. This means that unlike the thousands of other small businesses that do file, Ms. Murphy is not paying the business taxes the rest of our small businesses pay on their business property such as computers, printers and other business equipment."
"With all these tax and business problems and with no positive agenda to offer, it is clear that Ms. Murphy is a problematic candidate. Perhaps given this record it is understandable that she has nothing to run on but a negative campaign filled with attacks."
"If you can't pay your own taxes or pay them on time, don't run to raise ours or ask taxpayers to pay your salary. If you can't even show up to vote, don't ask for our votes," concluded McConville.
