FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. -
Be careful who you trust. That’s the message Fairfax County Police want to convey after a series of scams tricked at least two people into giving away thousands of dollars.
Police said a suspect approached a 30-year-old man at a Home Depot in Seven Corners. The victim agreed to give the suspect a ride into D.C. after the suspect showed him a large amount of cash.
While driving, police said the suspect convinced the victim to withdraw $9,000 from an ATM. After a discussion concerning the safety of U.S. banking institutions and “trust,” the suspect walked away with the money.
The incident took place Monday around 3 p.m.
The next day, police said a 68-year-old man was approached by two men at a Home Depot parking lot in the Merrifield area around 3 p.m. The suspects also convinced the man to give them a large sum of money.
In both cases, the suspects are described as black with a Jamaican or heavy foreign accents and ranging in ages from 40 to 60.
Police call these scams “confidence schemes.” They said the suspects gain the victim’s trust in order to defraud the victim of money. The suspects are often described as intimidating and victims can feel threatened by suspects. In other cases, victims are embarrassed at being duped and reluctant to contact police.
Anyone with information regarding either of these incidents is asked to contact Crime Solvers at 1-866-411-8477 or call Fairfax County Police at 703-691-2131.
